The Overwatch League Odds and Betting Guide
The Overwatch League (OWL) is the largest and most important event in Overwatch. Subsequently, the Overwatch betting opportunities it provides are second to none. In this OWL betting guide, we will take you through the history of this league and offer you a better understanding of why it’s so important if you’re interested in esports betting.
The Overwatch League provides numerous esports betting chances for those who want to bet on Overwatch. Every week during its duration, there are four days of competition and each of these days has around 4 matches. So in total, you get hundreds of Overwatch gambling opportunities over the course of each season and the more you follow the league, the stronger your OWL betting intuition will become.
The Overwatch League began in 2018 and initially, it had just 12 participants and a prize pool of $3,5 million. Then, after a highly successful first season, Blizzard decided to expand it and bring in 8 more teams. So in 2019, OWL had 20 teams and a prize pool of $5 million. For the 3rd season, the scale will likely remain the same as it was in season 2, but some minor things are still subject to change. Ultimately, Blizzard will decide what they want to do next in order to build a sustainable ecosystem for their most successful esport to date.
Here’s a brief history of the first two seasons of The Overwatch League.
The overall winner of this season was New York Excelsior. They played exceptionally well during all four stages and had a record of 34 W – 6 L at the end. The second best team was Los Angeles Valiant, with only 27 wins and 13 losses. However, in spite of their dominance during the regular season, the Playoffs saw London Spitfire win against Philadelphia Fusion in the Grand Final, while New York Excelsior came in 3rd – 4th place.
Due to the addition of a lot of new teams and players, the second season of The Overwatch League was quite different from the first. Given how dominant NYE had been in season 1, people had expected them to dominate the second season as well. Especially given the fact that the newer teams were less experienced and presumably, weaker. However, that was not going to be the case at all.
In the overall standings, the winner of season 2 was Vancouver Titans, one of the new teams, followed by San Francisco Shock. The big betting favorite, New York Excelsior, only managed to finish 3rd. As for the Playoffs, San Francisco Shock had a monstrous performance, initially losing to Atlanta Reign (3 – 4) in the Upper Bracket but then literally shocking the world with 5 consecutive wins, without losing a single map.
The Overwatch League has a long-duration format, offering 20 weeks of regular matches, plus Playoffs for each of its 4 stages, plus overall Playoffs at the end of the regular season. The whole thing is massive and constitutes the most important source of Overwatch action for those who enjoy watching the game or like to engage in Overwatch League betting.
The 3rd season of OWL is scheduled to start on February 8th, 2020. In principle, the strongest teams from season 2 will maintain their form and continue to dominate the league. In particular, keep an eye on San Francisco Shock, Vancouver Titans and New York Excelsior. These are the 3 big betting favorites ahead of this season.
