ESL One Birmingham 2019 is the last Dota 2 tournament before the final pair of Dota Pro Circuit events and The International 2019. Its practical significance is not important, because as you may know, this tournament does not belong to the DPC. Subsequently, it grants no qualification points at all. However, in terms of prestige and competitors, it is almost as big as a Major.
ESL One Birmingham 2019 is scheduled to take place between May 28th – June 2nd and in this article we will provide a Dota 2 betting guide for this event.
ESL One Birmingham 2019 brings together 12 participants. And these aren’t your standard competitors either. Usually, at tournaments that don’t belong to the Dota Pro Circuit and have a prize pool of just $300.000, many of the big teams decline to participate even if they’re invited, simply because they want to prepare more thoroughly for the events that really matter. Spending an entire week away from home isn’t the best idea if the rewards aren’t good enough.
However, in ESL One Birmingham 2019’s case, the rewards are definitely worth it, and we aren’t referring to the prize money. We are talking about the training provided by the tournament, thanks to the high caliber participants it has.
ESL One Birmingham 2019 features most of the best teams in the world.
Europe: Team Secret, Team Liquid, Ninjas in Pyjamas, OG, Alliance
China: Vici Gaming, PSG.LGD, Keen Gaming
North America: Evil Geniuses, Forward Gaming
Southeast Asia: TNC Predator
CIS: Gambit Esports
The most important teams that aren’t on this list are Virtus.pro, Royal Never Give Up and Fnatic. Apart from them, everyone who should be here is here and the expectations for a great show are high.
ESL One Birmingham 2019 offers $300.000 in prizes. The money will be shared among the 12 participants in the following way:
ESL One Birmingham 2019 takes place in a very interesting format. Initially, the 12 teams will be divided into two groups of six. Each group consists of Bo2 matches between every two teams. In the end, the top two competitors from every group advance to the Upper Bracket of the Main Event. The next two teams advance to the Lower Bracket, and the last two teams are eliminated. So only eight of the initial 12 teams will compete in the Playoffs Stage.
The two groups are as follows:
Vici Gaming (3.75 To Win Group A *)
Team Liquid (2.35 To Win Group A *)
Ninjas in Pyjamas (10.3 To Win Group A *)
OG (4.15 To Win Group A *)
Forward Gaming (1 To Win Group A *)
TNC Predator (15 To Win Group A *)
Team Secret (1.9 To Win Group B *)
Evil Geniuses (4.7 To Win Group B *)
PSG.LGD (3.36 To Win Group B *)
Keen Gaming (24 To Win Group B *)
Alliance (34 To Win Group B *)
Gambit Esports (24 To Win Group B *)
In Group A, the big favorites are Vici Gaming and Team Liquid. These are the teams that will most likely win the Upper Bracket spots. The next two sports are up for grabs and the main candidates are OG and Forward Gaming. However, keep in mind that NiP is also very strong and TNC Predator now has a new coach. More specifically, they are helped by Team Liquid’s former coach, Heen. The results have already started to appear as a result of this change, so nobody knows for sure what TNC is now capable of.
In Group B, Team Secret is the clear favorite. But the 2nd place could be won by at least two competitors: Evil Geniuses and PSG.LGD. One of them will almost certainly take one of the Lower Bracket spots, so the big question is who will take the other? We regard Gambit Esports and Keen Gaming as the only relevant candidates. Alliance is considerably weaker than both at this point.
ESL One Birmingham 2019 has at least four teams that could claim the title. We’ll have a look at them below.
To Reach Finals – 1.8*
To Win Outright – 3.2*
Secret is the world’s best team right now and they’ve been in this position for much of the season. In the 2018-2019 competitive year, Puppey and his squad played in no less than six Grand Finals and won five of them. That is absolutely impressive by any standards. And keep in mind that three of those six events were Majors.
Secret is the team that everyone has in mind when it comes to predicting the winner of The International 2019. And that’s because it’s very hard to imagine anyone who could beat them in a Bo3 in an elimination match. So far, only Virtus.pro has managed to do that, but they’ve looked quite burned out lately, after a very successful season in which they’ve played in three Grand Finals of Major events.
Going into ESL One Birmingham 2019, we expect Team Secret to play in the Grand Final. We won’t say they’ll definitely win the tournament, but a 2nd place should be almost a certainty if they don’t manage to claim the title.
To Reach Finals – 4*
To Win Outright – 7*
After a very disappointing run at the first three Majors of the season, Team Liquid proved their strength at the fourth, by competing against Team Secret in the Grand Final. They did lose that engagement but on their path to that final match they clearly showed everyone that they’re back to full strength and capable of beating almost any opponent.
In 2018-2019, Liquid played in three Grand Finals and won two of them. Both of these were at events outside of the DPC, so their relevance is somewhat questionable. However, the fact that they have now confirmed their capabilities at a Major event is evidence enough to make everyone regard them as one of the strongest lineups in the world.
At ESL One Birmingham 2019, we expect Liquid to get a top four finish at the very least.
To Reach Finals – 3.5*
To Win Outright – 6*
Vici Gaming is a team with a very high ceiling but also a fairly low floor. And their inconsistency is quite annoying. This season, we’ve seen them play in three Grand Finals, of which they won two. Their most important result, not just of this season but of the last several years at least, was their triumph at the DreamLeague Season 11 Major after a five game series against Virtus.pro.
At an event like this, Vici Gaming is certainly one of the big favorites, so we do expect to see them finish in the top four. ESL One Birmingham 2019 has only three or four other competitors that are on their level so we don’t expect anything less from them.
To Reach Finals – 3.75*
To Win Outright – 6.5*
EG may have lost the qualifier for EPICENTER Major in favor of Forward Gaming, but they’re still the best team in North America and one of the best teams in the world. In 2018-2019, EG has played in every Major and was on the podium no less than three times. Unfortunately for them, they seem to be doomed to finish 3rd whenever they get that high, but the fact that they’ve been able to do that with such consistency is still impressive.
At ESL One Birmingham 2019, given their consistently good results, we expect EG to place high and take advantage of any misstep from one of the other big competitors.
