Team Analysis

Here’s a brief analysis of the four competitors that are still in the race.

Team Liquid; Most Likely To Play In The Finals

To Reach Final

TBD

To Win It All

TBD

To Beat Evil Geniuses

1.5*

Liquid has been on the decline lately, dropping to number 6 in the global rankings. But the team still managed to win crucial matches against its future opponent from the first Upper Bracket match of ESL Pro League Season 11 NA Playoffs. They won not once but twice against Evil Geniuses in the last six weeks. This clearly shows that at least in terms of their opponent-specific preparation, they are more than ready to fight for a place in the Grand Final.

When it comes to big events, Liquid’s been to only two of them this year: BLAST Premier Spring 2020 Regular Season (4th – 6th out of 12 teams) and IEM XIV World Championship (5th – 6th out of 16). These two results show that Liquid is still a solid team, even though they’re not the dominant force they were in the previous two seasons. The roster is still intact, so it’s clear that it’s a motivation-related problem.

Going into ESL Pro League Season 11 NA Playoffs, Team Liquid is likely to reach the Grand Final, but it’s doubtful that they will manage to win it, given that they suffered a vital loss at the hands of FURIA in the Group Stage.

Evil Geniuses; May Have To Take The Long Route To Finals

To Reach Final

TBD

To Win It All

TBD

To Beat Team Liquid

2.51*

Evil Geniuses, much like Liquid, has had a stable roster over the past year (even though they borrowed it from NRG) and is now a fierce competitor to beat. World-class names such as tarik and stanislaw make EG a team with a very high ceiling and as a result they’re unpredictable when they get to the final stages of an event like this. EG could finish 4th or it could finish 1st. Realistically, they’re likely to finish 2nd or 3rd. But it all depends on how good they feel on match-day.

In terms of their global rank, EG is currently sitting at number 7 with 5 wins and 5 losses in the last 10 matches. They’ve had serious problems lately against OG, 100 Thieves and Liquid. So the first Playoffs match against Team Liquid is likely to go poorly for them. Nevertheless, we might still see them in the Grand Final, simply because neither FURIA nor MIBR looks strong enough to beat them at this point. EG defeated both of these opponents in the Group Stage of ESL Pro League Season 11 North America, so it wouldn’t be a big surprise if that happened again in the Playoffs. Should they lose, they will face one of these two teams in the Lower Bracket Finals. In all likelihood, it will be FURIA.

FURIA Esports; A Possible Dark Horse

To Reach Final

TBD

To Win It All

TBD

To Beat MIBR

1.45*

FURIA is currently ranked 11th globally and has a big chance of winning this tournament. Even though they’re outranked by two of the three rivals they may face at the event, their exceptional performances throughout the tournament have clearly proved that they’re much stronger than their rank suggests.

In its last 10 matches, FURIA had a record of 7 wins and 3 losses. What’s even more impressive is that it managed to defeat both Liquid and MIBR, which are to of the rivals they will likely face at ESL Pro League Season 11 NA. With MIBR they’ll meet for sure in the first match of the Lower Bracket, while with Liquid they may meet in the Grand Final, if they can get there. If things play out according to what statistics indicate, then FURIA will beat MIBR and Liquid will beat Evil Geniuses. This would result in a FURIA vs. EG match in the Lower Bracket Finals. The last encounter between these two teams ended with a 2 – 1 result in favor of Evil Geniuses.

MIBR; On An Impossible Mission

To Reach Final

TBD

To Win It All

TBD

To Beat FURIA Esports

2.66*

MIBR is probably the most vulnerable team at this stage of the tournament. And that’s because they’ve already lost once against each of the other three competitors that are still in the race. Based on the overall poor form that the Brazilian squad displayed in the last six months and the recent loss of their coach zews, it’s very difficult to be optimistic about MIBR’s chances for the remainder of the tournament. Even if they manage to beat FURIA in the first match of the Lower Bracket, they will almost certainly go down against EG or Liquid in the second match.

Right now, MIBR is ranked 24th globally and is playing with an unknown player by the name of meyern. He’s from Argentina, so I can understand the logic behind the decision. He can probably speak Portuguese to some degree since his native language is Spanish and Brazil is right next to his home country.

With MIBR, one of the big problems in the past has been communication. Every time they tried to bring in someone from the outside, communication problems appeared, and the experiment failed. And in trying to find Brazilians that are good enough to play with them, they either failed to pick the right players or simply couldn’t get to them, because they were already committed to succeeding with other teams. Just take FURIA, for example. Right now, the players on that team would have to be crazy to abandon their dream of winning something big together after all the effort they’ve put in. Their project has been two years in the making, and by this point, the players probably know each other so well that they can’t be bought that easily.

MIBR might have a chance of turning their superior experience at events like this into a victory, but that’s not likely to happen. Each of the other three teams that are still in the race has a reasonable amount of experience themselves and should be able to cope with anything MIBR throws at them.
